Westvlees, located in Westrozebeke, is among the largest producers of fresh and prepared pork in Belgium. At the site, company wastewater from the slaughtering and processing processes is treated in its own water treatment plant. Although this treatment is technically effective, in the past the open settling basins caused odour nuisance for the surrounding area.
To tackle this problem structurally, Westvlees turned to Task Environmental Engineering. We installed a compact, two-stage scrubber with a capacity of 5,000 m³/h, specifically designed to treat odours originating from the water treatment plant.
The system consists of two successive gas washing steps integrated in one vertical column:
- The first stage is a biological scrubbing stage, in which odour components are broken down by micro-organisms.
- The second stage is a chemical scrubbing step, aimed at neutralising remaining odour components that are difficult to biodegrade.
This combination offers a high odour removal rate. The plant was constructed in durable, chemical-resistant materials and features automated process control, allowing it to operate reliably with minimum maintenance. Since the commissioning of this scrubber, odour nuisance around the site has been greatly reduced, and Westvlees is again fully compliant with the applicable emission limits.
