Odour treatment industrial composting

Geurbehandeling in industriële composteringsinstallatie waarbij een gaswasser de schadelijke componenten uit de lucht haalt

Indaver NV, a leading player in the waste treatment and disposal sector, operates a composting plant in Grimbergen, where prunings, roadside grass, organic industrial waste and vegetable green waste from municipalities, companies and garden contractors, among others, are processed. The end product, a high-quality compost, meets strict environmental and quality standards.

However, the composting process releases significant amounts of odour, which – if left untreated – can lead to odour nuisance in the surrounding area. To prevent this, Indaver called on Task Environmental Engineering for the design and realisation of an odour treatment plant.

Task BV realised a counterflow gas scrubber with a capacity of 120,000 m³/h, specifically designed to treat air flows from the composting zone. The plant is composed of several parts:

  • A counterflow washer with sliding door for easy inspection and quick packing replacement. This easy access greatly facilitates maintenance and contributes to low operational downtime.
  • A heat exchanger, integrated to capture temperature differences and increase the efficiency of the scrubber.
  • A cooling tower, responsible for lowering the air temperature, which is crucial for stable operation and optimal odour removal.

Thanks to this combination of techniques, a very high odour removal rate is achieved, even in highly odorous air flows. The plant meets all physical and chemical design criteria from start-up. Both process parameters and emission measurements show that the plant is well within the applicable environmental standards.

For Indaver, this project is a further concretisation of its vision of sustainable and socially responsible waste management. By investing in high-performance odour treatment, the company is demonstrating its commitment to the environment and local residents.

With this installation, Task BV confirms its long-standing expertise in the design, construction and optimisation of air purification plants for complex applications in the waste sector. We provide not only the technology, but also an integrated approach, from preliminary study and pilot testing to implementation, training and follow-up.
