Sand filtration is an effective technique for removing suspended solids from waste or process water. This technique uses the physical properties of filter material, usually sand, to remove fine particles such as sludge, organic residues and other undissolved substances from the water.

In a typical sand filter, water flows vertically through the filter bed, moving from top to bottom. During this passage, suspended particles are left behind between the pores of the filter material.

Besides sand, other types of filter material can be used, each with their specific properties. The filter medium depends on the nature of the contamination, the degree of filtration required and the desired flow rate. Each material has unique process-technical properties.

Application: canal water treatment

In this application, sand filters are used for the continuous treatment of canal water. Raw water coming from the canal contains varying concentrations of suspended solids, which can fluctuate greatly under the influence of rainfall and flow. Thanks to the use of sand filtration, the water quality remains stable and suitable for further processing, e.g. as process water.

Advantages of sand filtration

Sand filters are low-maintenance and can be equipped with automatic backwashing. This ensures constant filtration capacity and extends the life of the filter material.

With its robustness, simplicity and high efficiency, sand filtration is a reliable solution for many sectors, including industry, drinking water production, wastewater treatment and surface water treatment.
